optical brighteners

Optical brighteners are fluorescent chemicals used in most paper products and laundry detergents to increase the intensity of whiteness in by converting ultraviolet light into a blue light. These chemicals do not breakdown easily and have been found to be harmful to aquatic life.

organic cotton

Organic cotton farming eliminates toxic chemicals and pesticides throughout the growing process, utilizes biological pest control methods, and relies on natural fertilizers to dramatically reduce the crop's environmental impact.

outgassing

To outgas is to remove occluded gases from, usually by heating; broadly : to remove gases from or to remove (gases) from a material or a space intransitive senses: to lose gases. At Green Home we use the term to describe materials (such material treated with formaldehyde) that emits or gives-off potentially dangerous vapors or gasses.

outgassing vapor

The word outgas refers to the release of vapor from a solid substance, such as plastic. Studies have found that polyester outgasses more than any other synthetic material.

ozone

A form of oxygen that consists of three atoms of oxygen, in contrast to normal atmospheric oxygen which consists of two atoms of oxygen. Ozone is an important greenhouse gas found in both the stratosphere and the troposphere. Ozone has effects beyond acting as a greenhouse gas. In the stratosphere, ozone provides a protective layer shielding the Earth from ultraviolet radiation and subsequent harmful health effect on humans and the environment. In the troposphere, oxygen molecules in ozone combine with other chemicals and gases (oxidization) to cause smog.
